Two Settlements, One Town, Lots of Old Trees
Tree Service in Churubusco covers a town with a long memory. Busco, as most people call it, grew out of two 19th-century settlements, Union and Franklin, that faced each other across the railroad tracks. When the Postmaster General turned down both names for a joint post office, residents took the name of the 1847 Battle of Churubusco, at the suggestion of local schoolteacher Eliza Rich. The post office has run since 1848. The town now sits in the extreme northeast corner of Whitley County, about 16 miles northwest of Fort Wayne, with 1,870 residents and 864 housing units at the 2020 census.
Low ground and wet roots
Churubusco lies near the headwaters of the Eel River, and the bottomlands southeast of town were the site of a 1790 battle in which Little Turtle's Miami warriors defeated a U.S. force under Colonel John Hardin. Local lore holds that the area's lakes and ponds are linked by channels and streams, and the town's most famous resident, Oscar the Beast of Busco, was a giant snapping turtle said to live in Fulk's Lake, since drained. The practical point for trees is simpler: there is a lot of low, wet ground here. Trees growing in it develop shallow roots, and silver maple, cottonwood and willow, which favor wet soil, grow fast and get big.
Fast growers, weak wood
Those fast-growing species turn up in plenty of yards and tree lines, and they share a habit: they put on size quickly and their wood is weaker than oak or hickory. Large silver maples in particular often grow several stems from one point, and the unions between them can split under ice or a strong gust. On those trees we usually recommend one of three things:
- crown reduction to shorten the longest, heaviest limbs
- cabling between stems on a tree that is otherwise healthy, to share load across a weak union
- removal, when decay in the union or trunk has gone too far for the first two to be safe
Town lots and alleys
In town, many homes have mature shade trees close to the house and garage, with overhead service wires running back to the alley. Most removals on those lots are done by climbing and lowering sections on ropes. We look at where brush can be chipped and where the truck can sit without blocking neighbors before we quote.
Turtle Days and timing
Turtle Days, the town's summer festival held at the park grounds, is described as the oldest continually held festival in Indiana. If you want trees trimmed or dead limbs removed before company arrives or before the street fills up, call a few weeks ahead so the work can be scheduled without a rush.
Outside town
Smith Township around Churubusco has farms, woodlots and homes on larger parcels. Typical rural work includes removing dead trees along fence lines and drives, opening up lanes, and storm cleanup. On open ground a planned fell is usually quicker and less costly than taking a tree apart from the top.

Churubusco Questions
My silver maple has three big trunks. Is it going to split?
Not necessarily, but multi-stem silver maples are among the trees we see fail most often in storms. Look for cracks, oozing or decay where the stems meet. If you see any, call us for a closer look.
Do you work around the lakes north of town?
Yes. Lake lots often have tight access and soft ground near the water, so we plan the route and staging before quoting.
Can you remove a willow by the pond?
Yes. Willows are often brittle and drop limbs. We take them down in sections if they are near anything that matters and grind the stump if you plan to mow there.
How far ahead should I book before Turtle Days?
A few weeks is a good rule for routine pruning in early summer. Storm damage is handled as it comes in.
