A Railroad Grid Full of Shade
Tree Service in Garrett means working in a city built around the railroad. Garrett was platted in 1875 when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was extended there, named for B&O president John W. Garrett, and incorporated as a city the same year. Most of its blocks were laid out on that early grid, and the Garrett Historic District is now on the National Register of Historic Places. At the 2020 census the city had 6,542 residents and 2,617 housing units, about 15 miles north of Fort Wayne and just west of Auburn.
Homeowners with long horizons
Census QuickFacts puts Garrett's owner-occupied rate at 79.5%, among the higher rates in the area, with a median owner-occupied value of $154,200. Many owners have been in their homes for years, and the trees around them have grown along with the house. Those owners usually aren't looking to clear the lot. They want the big maple out back to stay, minus the dead limb that hangs over the garage.
How we approach a mature tree
First, look up. Deadwood, broken hangers and limbs touching the roof are the most common problems and the cheapest to fix.
Then look at the trunk and base. Cavities, fungus, and loose or missing bark show where decay has set in. A tree with a solid shell and a small cavity may be fine for years; one with a seam running up from the soil is a different story.
Then look around. What will the tree hit if it fails? A garage, a neighbor's house, a parked car, a play set. That target decides how urgent the work is.
That sequence is the basis for every recommendation we make. You get it in writing, tree by tree.
The city's electric system
Garrett appears on the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission's list of municipal electric utilities that withdrew from commission jurisdiction, with a 2004 date. If you are on the city's system and limbs are near the lines or the service drop, call the city utility first. We work around their schedule when a disconnect is needed.
Cedar Creek south of town
Cedar Creek passes south of Garrett on its way from Auburn toward Leo-Cedarville, and the low ground along it and its tributaries supports large, fast-growing trees. Properties on the south and east edges of the city sometimes back up to that kind of ground, where silver maple, cottonwood and box elder grow quickly and break easily.
Removals between houses
Garrett's lots are close together, so most large removals are done by climbing and lowering, not felling. We note on the quote where the chipper will sit, how wood will be carried out, and whether an alley will be blocked for part of the day. If a trunk leans over a house, a crane may be the safest way to lift sections clear, and we explain why if we recommend one.
Ash on the older blocks
Like most northeast Indiana towns, Garrett lost many ash trees to emerald ash borer, and a few dead ones still stand in back yards and along alleys. Purdue Extension warns that dead ash turns extremely brittle and can drop limbs at any time, and that cutting ash before it dies is safer for everyone, including the climber. If you have one, it should be near the top of the list.

Garrett Questions
Is a hollow tree always dangerous?
No. Many trees stand for decades with a cavity, as long as enough sound wood surrounds it. The size of the hollow relative to the trunk, and what the tree would hit, determine the risk.
Can you prune a tree that hangs over from my neighbor's yard?
Generally you can trim branches over your side of the line, but you can't harm the tree as a whole. We stay on your side of the line and recommend talking with the neighbor first.
Will you block the alley?
Sometimes for a few hours. We tell you in advance and keep it as short as we can.
Do you grind stumps too?
Yes. We grind below grade, request utility locates first, and can rake out the chips so you can reseed.
