Space to Grow, Space to Work
Tree Service in Hoagland usually involves bigger trees and more room than we get in town. Hoagland is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Madison Township in southern Allen County. The CDP covers 3.40 square miles but had only 824 residents in 2020, about 242 per square mile. Houses are spread out, many on acreage, and the trees around them have had decades to grow without competition.
A town that started at the tracks
Hoagland was platted in 1872 as a station on the Fort Wayne, Richmond and Cincinnati Railroad, and its post office opened the same year. The older homes near the center of town reflect that railroad era, and so do some of the trees: large maples, oaks and conifers planted around farmhouses and along lanes more than a century ago. Old trees like these are worth keeping when they are sound, and expensive to deal with when they are not.
Assessing an old yard tree
With a mature tree, the question is usually not whether it has defects, since most old trees do, but whether those defects are likely to cause a failure where something or someone could be hit. We look at:
- the target: what is under the tree, the house, a play area, a lane, or an open field
- the trunk: cavities, seams, fungal fruiting bodies, and how much sound wood remains
- the roots: lifting, decay at the flare, or damage from past digging
- the crown: dead leaders, hangers, and limbs that have grown long and heavy
A tree with a defect over an open pasture may be fine to leave. The same tree over a bedroom is a different matter.
Removal on open ground
Where a tree has clear space to fall, a planned fell is often the most economical way to take it down. Cuts are laid out to steer the tree, and the lay of the land and any lean are worked into the plan. Close to buildings, it is taken apart from the top down instead. For very large trunks, we cut the wood into rounds and can leave it for firewood or haul it.
Windbreaks and lanes
Many rural lots near Hoagland have rows of evergreens or hardwoods planted to break the wind. Over time they thin at the bottom, lose trees to disease, or grow into overhead lines. We remove dead trees from the row, prune what is left, and can recommend replacements to fill the gaps.
Stumps, roots and mowing
On acreage, stumps tend to pile up over the years from trees taken down and never ground. They damage mower decks and keep you from leveling ground. We can grind a single stump or work through a list of them in one visit. Before grinding, we request utility locates through Indiana 811, which needs at least two full working days of notice, because buried lines on rural lots don't always run where owners expect.

Hoagland Questions
My windbreak is dying from the bottom up. Can it be fixed?
Lower branches on evergreens that have died from shading rarely grow back. We can remove the worst trees, prune the rest and suggest a second row of new plantings to restore the screen.
Can you leave the wood for firewood?
Yes. Tell us what length you want and where to stack it, and the quote will reflect that the wood stays on site.
Is a big old tree over a field worth removing?
Not always. If nothing valuable is within reach and it's not a danger to people or livestock, it may be better left standing. We tell you when a tree can wait.
Can you look at several trees in one visit?
Yes. On larger lots we walk the whole property and list each tree separately, so you can choose what to do now and what to leave for later.
