A Road Town Between Two Cities

Tree Service in Ossian works in a town built along a road. State Road 1 was made passable between Fort Wayne and Bluffton in 1843, and the Fort Wayne and Bluffton Plank Road Company, formed in January 1850, ran a toll road through here. The railroad arrived in 1869 and is now a Norfolk Southern main line. Ossian, in Jefferson Township, Wells County, is about four miles south of I-469 and about seven miles south of Fort Wayne International Airport, and it had 3,266 residents at the 2020 census.

A dense little town

Ossian packs 1,417 housing units into about 1.68 square miles, close to 2,000 people per square mile, which is dense for a small Indiana town. On lots like these, the trees that matter are the ones close to houses, garages and fences. A large removal usually means climbing and lowering pieces on ropes, because there is rarely space to drop a tree whole. We plan where the truck and chipper go so the job doesn't take over a neighbor's driveway.

Seasonal timing

You can prune most trees at any time of year, but some timing is better:

  • Late winter is a good time for structural pruning of most deciduous trees. With no leaves, the branch structure is easy to see, and the ground is often firm.
  • Early summer is when we see dead limbs most clearly, because they stand out against new leaves.
  • After storms, broken limbs and hangers should come out promptly before they fall on their own.
  • Oaks are best pruned in winter. Purdue Extension's oak wilt publication puts the highest-risk period at March 1 through the end of November, when fresh wounds attract the sap beetles that carry the fungus. Oak wilt has been confirmed in more than 60 Indiana counties since 1979.

What's growing here

Yards around Ossian hold the common shade trees of northeast Indiana: maples, oaks, lindens, honeylocust, spruce and pine, and the remains of the ash that once lined many streets. Out in the country, fence rows and woodlot edges are full of volunteer trees, box elder, mulberry, black cherry, that grow into lines and over lanes if no one cuts them back.

Lines and locates

If a limb is tangled in a utility line, call the utility first; don't cut near it. Limbs touching the service drop to your house can usually be removed once the utility disconnects the line. Grinding a stump requires an Indiana 811 locate request at least two full working days ahead. We handle that when the job is booked.

Rural lots south of the beltway

Ossian's surroundings in Jefferson Township are a mix of farms and homes on acreage, with tree lines along the old road corridors and the railroad. On those lots we often handle several jobs in one visit: a dead tree near the house, a few stumps that make mowing hard, and growth hanging into a lane or field edge. Felling on open ground is usually quicker and less expensive than a climbing removal, and the estimate will say which method we plan to use.

What a written estimate covers

Each estimate we write for Ossian homeowners lists the trees by location, the work for each one, whether stumps are included, and what happens to the wood and brush. If something changes once the job starts, such as hidden decay that makes a climb unsafe, we stop and talk to you before going ahead.

Ossian Questions

When is the best time to prune my oak?

In winter, after the end of November and before March. Purdue Extension calls March through November the high-risk window for oak wilt, because fresh wounds attract the beetles that spread it.

Can you remove the trees growing in my fence row?

Yes. We cut them, chip the brush, and can grind or treat the stumps so they don't sprout back.

Do you serve the rural areas around Ossian?

Yes, across Jefferson Township and northern Wells County.

Do I need to be home during the work?

Not necessarily. We need access to the yard and to know where pets and vehicles will be. We will walk the finished job with you if you are there.
